Not being a believer in ghosts, I prefer to believe this was by some complex mechanization of the villain’s that Nancy just didn’t discover, but it’s still pretty spooky…ġ0 – Nancy’s name is whispered, followed by red eyes – Curse of Blackmoor Manor Furthermore, there’s never any explanation as to how the candles turn on and off by themselves. Which means either this is a supernatural event, or the villain has snuck back in to continue scaring you and is still lurking around somewhere. (If you get here by going down the plain spiral stairs at the end of the hallway, this may or may not be followed by a glimpse of a shadow going along the wall – I can’t really remember it, but my sister says it happens sometime around this part of the game.) The whispering is easily explained because, by this point, you’ve found the tape recorder in Abby’s room, but it’s still creepy because, as far as we know, nobody else is in the mansion at this moment. Sometime towards the end of the game – when every frightening moment is accentuated by the fact that you’re all alone in the house – if Nancy goes into the room where Rose normally is and looks at the little table to the right of the door, the unlit candles will suddenly flicker on and a creepy whispering noise will begin. (In fact, this makes it both less and more chilling – it doesn’t jump out as much in my mind, but the fact that it was so rare does enshroud it in an extra level of mystique.) I couldn’t find it on YouTube walkthroughs, either, so I’ll have to explain it from faded memory. This was largely because I haven’t played Message in a Haunted Mansion in a very long time, and, in all the times I did play it, I didn’t often witness this event. It was simply because I couldn’t decide between this moment and my number 10 choice. Why did I make this list my top 11? No, not so I could shoehorn in a Nostalgia Critic reference. So, without further ado, let’s honor those spooky happenings which made us unable to play without the lights on, volume down, and our eyes half-closed – the top 11 scariest Nancy Drew game moments!ġ1 - Candles flicker on and off, accompanied by whispering – Message in a Haunted Mansion (Which is probably a good thing, since I have a feeling that Ghost of Thornton Hall will give everything on this list a run for its money.) Also, I’ve only played up to Alibi in Ashes, meaning that no moments from Tomb of the Lost Queen onwards will appear. This list will recount the moments that scared me the most – keep in mind that all these entries are based on personal choice, and not meant to define the series’ generally most frightening moments for all players. But no – we intrepid (or not-so-intrepid) gamers had to face ghosts, witches, banshees, monsters, werewolves, phantom hounds and horses, and, perhaps most chillingly of all, psychopaths who’d gleefully kill an eighteen-year-old for cash. The slogan of HER Interactive, the company which makes the Nancy Drew games, is “for girls who aren’t afraid of a mouse.” Which would be fine, if the foes Nancy faced throughout the games were rodents. Therefore, if you don’t want to know what happens in those games, don’t read on! (Yeah, I know it’s pretty late for a Halloween special, but my internet wasn’t working for a lot of the month of October.) As a warning, this list WILL include SPOILERS for Message in a Haunted Mansion, Secret of the Scarlet Hand, Curse of Blackmoor Manor, and Shadow at the Water’s Edge. This year, I’m doing something a little different – the top 11 scariest Nancy Drew game moments. Last year, for my Halloween journal entry, I counted down my top 15 creepiest Nancy Drew game soundtracks.
